What You Need To Know

What is an Umbrella Company?

Working through an umbrella company is a fantastic option for anyone just getting started as a contractor or freelance worker. As well as providing an ideal solution for those planning to work shorter assignments, umbrella employment means you will become an employee of the umbrella company, allowing you to enjoy the flexibility of self-employment, whilst also experiencing the same benefits and security of permanent employees.

Instead of worrying about managing complicated paperwork, working under an umbrella company removes much of the hassle involved with managing your finances and taxes. As the first steps into self-employment can be daunting, an umbrella solution makes things easier by ensuring you are always paid accurately and on time.

How does an Umbrella Company work?

Since working through an umbrella company turns you into an employee of that business, you’ll be paid just like a regular, permanent employee. Whilst other self-employment options will involve you filing your own tax returns, an umbrella company takes care of all the hard work for you, deducting income tax via PAYE and National Insurance contributions.

Under an umbrella company, your services will be contracted out to the end user (client or agency). From there, you’ll be in charge of submitting completed timesheets to the umbrella company, who in turn will then invoice the client for the work you’ve done. The client will then pay the umbrella company, who will then pass it on to you (minus deductions).
